The Secret

Jan 17, 12:46 PM · from the mouth of Tyler

Hello friends-

It’s time for another movie recommendation. You may recall that some time ago I recommended that you go out and rent What the Bleep Do We Know? I know that at least Andy answered the call and rented it. (By the way, if you still haven’t, go do so. It’s a thinker.)

Anyway, I found another that is somewhat along the same lines. In fact some of the scientists that appeared in Bleep are also in this one. This movie is called The Secret. It’s interesting… it’s basically a bunch of philosophers, scientists, visionaries, motivational speakers, authors, etc., talking about “The Secret,” which appears to be the key to the universe. I think you sort of have to suspend your disbelief a bit when you watch it and just sort of accept what they’re telling you. Because “The Secret” sounds like kind of a stretch. Ready for it? Here’s the spoiler: The secret is the Law of Attraction. Whatever you focus on, will come true. Whatever you want in life can be yours just by thinking it and staying positive. Ask and you shall receive.

I know. Sounds like a load of hooey. And maybe it is. I don’t know. But the movie is interesting if you can maintain an open mind. I enjoyed it.

Unlike What the Bleep, you don’t have to rent it. You can watch it on your computer! This alone is pretty exciting to me. You can stream it full-screen and in high quality if you have a broadband connection. I have Verizon DSL and worked great. It costs $4.95 to watch it online, which you can pay for with a credit card or a PayPal account. Since my computer is in my living room, that worked out nicely.

Go to thesecret.tv to watch a trailer for it and to watch the actual movie. Even if you don’t buy into it, it makes you think about Life, The Universe, and Everything. And the production is pretty nice.

I'd love to hear your take on this... [2]

eMusic saves the day!

Jan 8, 05:35 PM · from the mouth of Tyler

So was sitting at my desk thinking, “I need something new to listen to.” So I clicked on over to eMusic and within 30 seconds, I found it. The Duhks!

I’ve heard of The Duhks, and have heard a couple of their songs on the radio. Well, after listening to a few of the sample tracks from their album Your Daughters & Your Sons, I was sold. Great stuff. Highly recommended.

The Duhks play a delightful flavor of acoustic music. They’re Canadian, which with a few exceptions (ahem, Shania Twain, Avril Lavigne…) counts for bonus points in the musical world. Technically they’re classified as bluegrass, but they’ve got a lot of other influences. Celtic music, especially. Their self-titled release was produced by Béla Fleck. The music is gorgeous. Beautiful female singer (men sing on a couple tracks), tasty harmonies, toe-tappin’ rhythms.

Get thee to eMusic!

Incredible Guitarist

Dec 18, 12:16 PM · from the mouth of Tyler

Well it was a joy to see Andy, Lisa, Jake and Kate this weekend. Thanks for coming out to see your old buddy Ty.

A colleague of mine found this incredible guitarist named Andy McKee on YouTube. You’ve got to watch. You may remember on Saturday night that I played you some of Michael Hedges music… This guy has a similar musical style, but his technique is something to behold.

Watch this first.

Then watch this and check out the incredible guitar he’s playing!

Click around and watch some of his other stuff too… it’s gorgeous.

Love Ty.

This is eating me up

Dec 5, 07:32 PM · from the mouth of Tyler

I don’t know if you guys have been watching the news or not, but a family has endured quite the week in the wilderness of Oregon. James Kim is a senior editor for C|Net, and does a lot of reviews for MP3 players and other digital audio. I watch him every week on C|Net’s TiVo videocast. Well he and his family got lost in the mountainous wilds of Oregon on their way back home to San Francisco from a Thanksgiving trip on Oregon’s coast. He, his wife, and two little daughters were missing for 9 days.

This is about where I picked-up the story yesterday morning. I began obsessing about it, partly because I’m familiar with James Kim from his C|Net stuff, and probably in part because I’m going to be a father, and a story about a family in crisis is particularly impactful.

Well the news this morning was that they had found the mother and two girls yesterday afternoon. They were alive and relatively well. That’s great news! But they still haven’t found James, who trekked out on his own to find help a few days ago.

I hope they find him alive.

Peeing and Pooping

Nov 29, 11:58 PM · from the mouth of Tyler

Well I’ve got this sexy iMac with a little camera built into it, so I might as well get my money’s worth out of it. I learned tonight exactly how easy it is to record a movie and upload it to the web using Quicktime. So I created a little piece called Tyler Theatre. It’s not anything profound, actually I was just testing the whole Quicktime/.mac thing out. But maybe it’ll become something I put some effort into. Or maybe it’ll got the way of my blog and be a one time thing. Meh. We’ll see. So without further adieu, may I present:

Tyler Theatre.

We're going public

Nov 7, 07:21 PM · from the mouth of Tyler

Over the past month, I’ve left tiny little clues that something may be brewing. One such example was the posting entitled “My Awesome Wife” where I told how cool she was for making me a cake that resembled a pint of Guinness. After discussion of the cake, I added this picture, and the statement, “I’m not tellin’ why she’s so happy though!”...

Well the time has come. The reason she’s so happy is that about 3 minutes before I took this, we found out we’re pregnant!

(Okay, okay, SHE’s pregnant.)

I know what you’re thinking. “God help us all. Tyler’s multiplying.”

Yes friends, it’s true. Sometime around June 14th, there will officially be a miniature TyTy in the world. The seed has been planted. The spawn is growing as you read this.

Here’s our ultrasound, from this past Friday:

I’m super psyched. This did come as a surprise us. We were semi-trying. Or should I say we were not NOT trying. We had a scare back in September where Jess was a week late. Over the course of that week, we went through the process of denial to acceptance. Then it turned out to be a false alarm. But soon after that we began to think it wouldn’t be all that bad. So we started semi-trying, assuming that it would take up to a year to successfully get a sprout, (as is often the case with many couples.) Well turns out, my boys are pretty strong swimmers.

So anyway, there it is. We’re having a baby. And we couldn’t be happier.

Yay for autumn!

Nov 2, 11:44 AM · from the mouth of Tyler

Well since nobody’s said anything in a few days, I’ll post some pictures for fun.

Here’s a picture of my Halloween pumpkin. He’s got a carrot for a nose. Whoopee!

And here’s a picture of a pretty tree in my front yard. Notice Jordan watching me in the window. Hooray!!

Anybody else take any fun pics lately?

Love Ty.

Please, you MUST listen to this NPR story. I couldn’t help but laugh out loud repeatedly while listening at work. This should go down as a radio classic.

My awesome wife

Oct 14, 11:28 AM · from the mouth of Tyler

So for my birthday last week, we had a beer party of sorts. My friends here asked what I wanted for my birthday, and I said nothing… just bring some good beer. So it turned into a beer party.

My amazingly awesomely cool wife made me this cake:

I must explain the Superman thing. It’s kind of an inside joke. After we saw the Superman movie, (which as you all know, I enjoyed thoroughly) Jess was joking that she needed to get me all kinds of Superman paraphernalia: Superman pajamas, Superman t-shirt, Superman lunchbox, Superman thermos, Superman backpack, Superman sheets, Superman wallpaper, Superman halloween costume, etc…. so my party had a dual Superman and Beer theme.

Here, just for fun, is a pretty picture of my pretty wife, that I took with my pretty camera in my parents pretty backyard last week. (Don’t hate me for not telling you guys that I was in Connecticut… we were literally just swinging through on our way to and from Boston). I’m not tellin’ why she’s so happy though!
