More blog action...

Apr 28, 12:11 AM · from the mouth of Jim

It’s like that from a bad geek porno – hotter, steamier, wild blog action! K, so maybe not like that, but go check out our new blog Asante Photography… The Dialogue.

So, yeah, it’s been a while since I’ve had a chance to participate. Hopefully I’ll be seen a tinier bit more. For those that don’t know, the reason is that I’m now self employed. The evil company that I worked for after Maxtor had another round of layoffs and I was on it. This was quite alright IMO since they were burning me out like a candle in a forge. So, I’m now entering the next chapter of my career aspirations: to be a starving artist. :)

We’re frantically scrambling to get a studio location and everything into gear for this season so that I can go full time and see what happens. We think that, while it won’t be easy, we’re positioned to make the business a viable form of income. Our largest competitor (who’d been the brand name in Longmont for 32 years) has retired and all the wolves are moving in. We have some pretty good footing in the area and think we’re positioned to take a large portion of the open market share.

Anywho, hope the rest of you are good!

Australia & New Zealand Summary.

Jan 24, 08:54 PM · from the mouth of Jake

Alright, alright… I’ll write up a little something about my trip. It’s rough repeating myself over and over again. I planned on making a handful of posts over on Re¢ently but I haven’t gotten around to it yet. There’s lots of little things to get accomplished. Maybe if I didn’t have to go to work everyday. ;)

I did put up two-hundred and sixty pictures on flickr Monday and I’m still trying to get through them and add in some titles and tags and stuff. I wish I had less touristy ones, but what can ya do? I originally shot about five-hundred and fifty so be happy you don’t have to click that many times to see them all. ;)

So what good would this be if I didn’t include at least a decent run down of what occurred. The good and the bad. ;) Let’s start with the day I left, and all the fun traveling. I was sick. A lovely cold attacked me, proving I’m not a ninja. I also successfully lost my breakfast on the way to the airport. Thank you Dunkin Donuts, your large, styrofoam cups saved the car. So after Kate found me some Dramamine we headed off for Sydney.

A wallaby pacing in front of the glass. Sydney was a pretty good start to the trip. We started with New Years Eve and the Sydney fireworks. The fireworks were nice, the the drunken crowds were not. At one point we moved to a mellower place and had to bypass a “street brawl.”

We also spent some time at the Sydney Aquarium and Wildlife World (seen at right). It was lovely to see all the native creatures. We bought a special ticket that gave us access to both parks and the Sydney Tower, which we visited the next day after having lunch with a friend of Kate’s.

Finally I took a walk by myself down to the Opera House to check it out. Unfortunately it was too late to go on a tour, but I took a bunch of pictures.

View of New Zealand, near Queenstown. New Zealand was a short hop away. Starting in Christchurch I took a detour to the 24 hour clinic where I was diagnosed with a sinus infection and given ten day’s worth of antibiotics. No beer for Jake. :( That night though we had a superb dinner, even without my sense of smell I could taste how good it was.

Now we start a whirlwind of running from place to place on a bus. I started with an Air Safari tour. up and around the nearby mountains, including Mt. Cook, the highest peak in the land.

A couple days later we were on a boat in Milford Sound. Before dinner we went out in some kayaks and got a little tour. Until someone fell in the water toward the end. Upon returning to the boat, Kate and a bunch of other people decided to jump in the water and go swimming. Well, swim back to the boat and jump in again anyway. I did not have enough clothes with me to be so brave. The following morning we were treated to a drive out to the Tasman Sea. More stories and these interesting waterfalls that sometimes gusts of wind hit them and they break up into mist going back up the mountain. One of the crew referred to them as Viagra Falls. And everyone’s favorite of course, dolphins.

Onward to Queenstown we go! Where there are many exciting activities. I fell off a bridge, went for a boat ride, met some kiwis, and did some other various touristy things like shopping, etc.

The Dart River Safari had some interesting stuff involving LoTR and a river boat you do 360’s in. And the Kiwi Park was a nice walk and we learned some interesting things. Though Kate and I (mostly Kate) got teased for it not involving danger.

After the few days in Queenstown we did the most invigorating (you would love it Yimmy) hike up Fox Glacier. A good four hours roundtrip you start in dense forest at the bottom and walk up and around the glacier.

Kate looking at a Common Wombat Finally we head back to Tasmania and Kate’s new apartment. These days are spent relaxing and getting Kate settled. They were just as fun as the rest of the trip, just less riding on busses. Hobart is a port city and Kate resides in Sandy Bay, right next to the water.

So along with Salamanca Market and doing a ghost tour we had lots of leisurely walks along the water and good sea food. In fact on the last night I treated Kate and her friend Myonghee to dinner at a fancyish place right on the water. That was to thank Myonghee for picking us up at the airport and driving us around we needed it.

The driving included a trip to Bonorong Wildlife Park where I got to see some Tassie Devils and the wombat pictured above. Also she picked us up after we bought a few too many appliances at Big W. Which for Bryan and John… It’s not directly affiliated (it’s owned by the local Woolworth’s chain) but looks and acts exactly like Walmart. Right down to the smiley face and “rolling back” prices. It was very eerie.

Sadly I had to come home. I love you guys, but I easily could have stayed down there in the sun enjoying myself. Besides it’d give you guys a new place to visit, and you’ll have a place to stay. ;)

'Refugees' in American Samoa Airport Terminal The melancholy trip home was capped off by an extra day being added to the flying. We had a fire sensor malfunction in one of the cargo holds. So our plane had to land in American Samoa. Not too far from my start in Tassie. After a lovely eight hours of waiting in the terminal we were off again. Without luggage. Because of the extinguishers in the cargo hold firing. Now we’re in Hawaii for a couple hours and finally I get to San Francisco. Only it’s too late to get another plane so I’m off to a hotel. After a lovely shower and returning my dirty clothes to my back I get to fly first class to JFK. Arriving home at about 8am Tassie time. About forty-eight hours after I waved goodbye to Kate from the airport shuttle.

If you’d like to read more about this interesting journey Kate has posted a couple times on her site (and she’s a much better writer than me). And I have a couple on Re¢ently also. Plus I hope to write more, and be a little more in depth about various highlights.

Whew this has taken a while to write. Hopefully there are no typos, I’m too tired to fix them. I have now ended my sabbatical from the site. ;)

Oh the sweet, sweet taste

Jan 12, 02:18 AM · from the mouth of Jim

... of booze and cameras. Hey wait, isn’t that supposed to be “of mice and men”? Meh, not in this case; I don’t heave nearly that much class. But I do have a glass, and it’s full of something yummy; something layered. Why yes… it’s an Oatmeal Cookie. Kind of a funny name for a drink ehh? Why yes, I would agree, but it’s just so durn good that I just couldn’t help but post about it. It is composed of equal amounts of (pay attention to this order if you want it to layer right), Kahlua , Bailey’s and Jäger. Kinda neat ehh? it tastes just as good as it looks. It’ll also give you that nice Bailey’sesque warmth running through your veins on a nice cool (12°) snowy CO evening. (According to a friend of ours, the Farmer’s Almanac claims that we’re going to have a “blizzard” every weekend for the next 6 weekends. Wow. I mean… have I mentioned… wow?! The snow from the last 2 huge storms hasn’t melted yet and we’re actively getting more as I type this.)

So it may seem as though this post is pretty much about booze and nothing important, but the reality is that I have a new toy – a very smooth, black, gorgeous toy. (And no… it’s not a sex toy.) It’s… a Nikon D200. Well children, I finally cracked and bought it. About two months ago, we finally replaced Sarah’s very well loved and exceptionally faithful Canon 300D with a beautiful new Canon 30D. She was very much in need of the new body for a myriad of reasons, but this last season had exposed that we both needed new bodies. Well, after a few months of deliberation and budgeting, I finally concluded that I could do it too and that I could easily justify it. I ordered it on the 21st of December and received last week thanks to all the splendid weather we’ve been getting lately. The wait may have been a great test of my patience, but trust me, it was well worth it. This is, quite literally, the camera that I’ve been waiting for since before I purchased my D70. Nikon listened to us and though they may have taken their sweet bloody time, they produced a digital F100 (+ more.)

I’m still in the process of digging through the vast and nearly overwhelming amount of features, options and toys in this thing, but I can already say that it’s going to be the best camera that I have owned yet. I hope that I can bring honor to its existence.

_Oh! I forgot to bring up a fun fact about the Oatmeal Cookie picture – I took it on the D200 at ISO1600. If you look at the larger size of it, you will notice a small bit of noise that has the seemingly typical Nikon Digital film grain flavor. I’m not sure how much you’ve played with higher ISOs on your digis, but if you have, you’ll probably notice that this thing has a truly splendid lack of noise at such a high ISO. We had thought that Canon had the edge in the noise arena (and it does when shooting in JPEG), but when processed from RAW in PShop CS2, the two bodies perform almost identically. Saweeet – those low light wedding ceremonies that forbid flash will be just a touch less hellish._

Compact Flash Comparison 1GB

Aug 30, 03:51 PM · from the mouth of Jake

With all the talk about cameras lately I thought I would just throw up a quick link to a comparison of high speed compact flash cards. I know not everyone’s camera uses Compact Flash, but it’s still an interesting read.

p.s. I have the Kingston Elite Pro they mention and it is mighty quick. I’m sure it would be better with a faster camera. It was a steal with a coupon and a rebate to boot.

A New Technique

Aug 26, 12:56 AM · from the mouth of Jim

So, first of all, I’ve gotta say that I’m not intending that this be interpreted as any type of pissing contest after TyTy posted his pics. I found a couple of new post-processing techniques today and the A.D.D. took over my soul.

This was the result… (click to enlarge)

More Digital SLR

Mar 26, 11:04 PM · from the mouth of Jake

I’m pretty sure I’m never going to get a digital SLR at the rate things are happening. For a while there I obviously thought I’d just wait and “get a lower level camera to take shots on the go.”

But after a whopping 1 actual referral I figure that’s a bust. So I pondered what to do, I could always go the route of Yimmy and get the D70. Or I could go out and get myself the Canon equivalent. I still figure those $1500-ish models are a little higher than I can afford. But I also never like to go half assed.

So what do I do?

My current camera system is Pentax, though I don’t have as many lenses as Jim. So I could actually jump to another manufacturer. Well I thought I had an epiphany a short while ago. Pentax released an updated digital SLR, the get the thing for $700 if I just shop around.

Hell, the model has the exact same sensor as Jimmy’s. So what’s the problem, why not do this as a stepping stone for now?

Well then Canon just had to release the XT, an 8 megapixel update to the original digital rebel. Plus we still never heard of a D200 from Nikon… so what to do? How do you figure something like this out?

Well I think I’m gonna need a good ass kicking so that I don’t go out and buy the *ist DS. I think the price is pretty enticing. Does anyone have any thoughts?

Beer logos and other random naughty bits

Dec 6, 12:09 PM · from the mouth of Jake

A lot easier than building it from scratch, while drunk

Well ok, so they’re not actually naughty.

Guiness LogoI almost met this guy once, there are occasionally blogger meet and greets in the Boston area, Dan Cederholm. He’s got a link to a large list of Beer Logos in Illustrator format. So if any of you are in need of a logo, head on over there. I’m not sure how long the web site will be there since one of the beer companies might complain.

And of course it’s mostly famous beer brands.

Free camera for Christmas

It’s going along smoothly so far. With one random person I now have 4 tentative referrals. Bryan and Ty, make you sure you follow through with that stuff, they need to get a 100% confirmation. Just remember, the free ISP signups seem to be the best bet. I plan on cancelling my service soon and just reaping the free referral. :) Thanks again for helping me out with being cheap.

Photo headers

Everything seems to be working fine, but we need picture submissions. Remeber it’s 770×130 currently for picture size. The two I put up there were crops from some desktop wallpaper I have so it’s not my work. I’d like the delete them so as not to get in trouble with the true owners.

I’m trying to come up with ways of highlighting who posts the picture and stuff. I don’t want too much text on the page, so maybe just a small “by: so and so” in the bottom right hand corner.

That is all for now…

I cracked...

Dec 1, 12:09 PM · from the mouth of Jim

Well, it happened – I couldn’t wait any longer and decided to “bide my time.” Yes boys, I am the proud parent of a HUGE credit card debt, once again. But man does it take purty pictures.

I decided that it’s not realistic to believe that Nikon will have the D90 (aka D200) out on the streets much before an April time line. It’ll probably be announced in Feb. but if the D2x is any example of their market to street performance, it’ll take a few months after they announce it for it to hit the streets.

So, I’m getting my feet wet with a shiny new D70. Nikon is pimping them out with the craziest deals and rebates right now, so I put a whole kit together for buttass cheap comparitively.

For the yackmeister, I bought an SB-800 flash (since my 28-DX can’t talk TTL with the D70), a 24-85 3.5-4.5 AF-S lens, a 1GB Sandisk CF card and the D70 body. With all my other lenses, I now have a rather complete kit (well, except that I can’t get any lower than 36mm on the digital – someday I’ll spend the $1200 and buy the 12-24 DX lens.)

Anyway, here are some test shots that I took yesterday at high noon. They’re nothing terribly special and I was playing with different color spaces and all that, so hopefully there’ll be better ones to come. I also haven’t bolted my nicest (aka, the BIG gun) lens onto it, so I should have some pretty nice pics after I shoot with that one. My BIG gun should produce some sick pics on this body.

Kinda like a Pyramid scheme... without the work

Nov 29, 04:31 PM · from the mouth of Jake

I was thinking about doing something like this to get a free iPod a while back. But I figured it was too much work.

But then I noticed that people were actually receiving iPods.

But although I may want to try that out in the future with you guys. I heard of a new one, get a free digital camera

You basically pick between 4 different cameras and then sign up for one free offer (just make sure you click on my referral link, otherwise I won’t get credit). I signed up for the free one month of Netscape Dial-up. I figure once it “goes through” I can just cancel and I’m never even charged anything.

It’s not quite getting a 20D but since I’ve been wanting a digital camera for a while that I can use for everyday stuff and not have to get film developed. Besides it’s f’n free if you don’t let the offer lapse and start sending some company money. :)

And if you’re curious, I had a hard time deciding between the Canon A95 and the Sony DSC-W1 but I ended up picking the Canon for it’s slightly better picture quality and it doesn’t use a Sony memory stick.

I looked at reviews at a bunch of places. including cNet and Steve’s Digicams

I hope at least a couple of you try it out so I can get my free camera. It requires 7 referrals, so even if all of you help me out I’d still need 1 more. I guess I’ll post this on my other blog too…

Thanks everybody
